Dan Bau is a monochord which derives its name from the gourd that originally was attached to the handle.
The instrument is played on natural harmonics on its one string, the fundamental of which is altered with the handle, held with the thumb and index finger of the left hand.
In this manner, intricate scales and articulation such as vibrato and glissando can be performed.

According to the official historian Quoc Su Quan Trieu Nguyen in his ”Dai Nam thuc luc tien bien” the first copy of a dan bau was made in 1770. Researchers today believe the instrument to be perhaps a thousand years older.

A modern dan bau uses an electro-magnetic pick up, like those used on an electric guitar, and has a considerably greater dynamic and volume than the original instrument.

En modern Dan Bau använder en elektromagnetisk mikrofon som till en elgitarr och har idag en betydligt större dynamik än det ursprungliga instrumentet med akustisk klanglåda.
